Modest intentions go a long way in this steamy crime flick, which delivers on its narrowly focused promise of illicit sex and chicanery. Ex-convict Lew (Dominic Purcell) is working as a craftsman and making a half-hearted effort to go legitimate with his realtor girlfriend, Rita (Joy Bryant). The emotionally aloof Lew is still recovering from the emotional wounds of finding the dead bodies of his wife, Janice (Roxanna Zal), and her lover on a boat. While posting his hand-made advertising signs late at night, Lew overhears a conversation from within a parked car, where a married man named Ralph (Desmond Harrington) is making out with his slutty girlfriend, Isobel (Ali Larter), while hammering out the details of a kidnap-murder plot. Ralph plans to abduct his chop-busting wife, Florence (Gina Gershon), and extort money from her rich, addlepated relative. Lew continues to eavesdrop and realizes that Ralph intends to get rid of Florence but keep the ransom. Spotting a get-rich-quick opportunity, Lew decides to muscle in on the adulterers' lethal scam. Unfortunately, a mystery man calling himself Herbert (Dwight Yoakam) pops up and accuses Lew of the double homicide of Janice and her lover; Herbert knows that Lew merely disposed of the slain couple, because Herbert himself is the real murderer. But Janice's lover was Herbert’s brother, and Herbert needs to produce his corpse in order to collect his inheritance. Even with Herbert shadowing him, Lew trails after the kidnappers, intercepts the vituperative Florence and stashes her away. Can Lew guarantee Florence's safety while he turns Isobel and Ralph against each other? The road to Florence's ransom money winds up littered with corpses, and will lead someone to jail. Screenwriter Russell P. Marleau's sweaty-palmed account of dishonor among thieves isn't particularly baffling, but the cast is attractive and Gershon is a hoot as the hot-potato captive. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
