Writer-director Constantine Giannaris loses control of his black comedy-thriller's tone and winds up stuck in an artistic dead end. When Suzanne's (Katrin Cartlidge) bisexual boyfriend, Sean (Stuart Laing), is fished out of the Thames by the police, she deals with her grief by looking for someone to blame. She's convinced that one of the three people with whom Sean hooked up on the last night of his life must be responsible for his death. Sean met small-time drug-dealer Angel Farnham (Con O’Neill) at a club, where Angel introduced him to gay politician Harry Roberts (James Fleet) and lesbian TV hostess Andrea Wallis (Frances Barber). Because Harry is instantly infatuated with Sean, Angel offers to drive them to a private party. When they find themselves tailed by the police for speeding, none of the three wants to answer questions about their doped-up passenger, so they drop Sean off at a bridge. But he's still alive when they leave. For her own peace of mind, Suzanne breaks into Angel's flat, but the plan backfires: Angel fills Suzanne in on details about Sean's unsavory lifestyle. Then two mob collectors come calling and gleefully throw Angel off a terrace. Suzanne turns her attentions to Harry by posing as a publicist, but all she gains is more unsavory information about her late boyfriend's sexual adventuring. Disgusted, she ties up Harry in an S&M sling and leaves the humiliated politician for the press corps. Harry’s decision to swing his way to freedom ends badly. Suzanne then picks up Andrea at a gay bar, and is treated to Andrea's highly biased theory about Sean's demise. Can Suzanne face life with the knowledge that her party-boy lover's killer or killers will probably go unpunished, and that their relationship was built on lies? Writer-director Giannaris strives for eccentric boldness but only gets as far as smirking sexual impropriety, and her noirish crime film quickly sinks into self-parody. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
