Converting on months of Internet hype in the way Snakes on a Plane couldn't, Cloverfield topped the weekend box office with $41 million, besting Star Wars: Special Edition's 11-year-old record for a January debut. Katherine Heigl was beaming as she walked the red carpet Monday night for the premiere of her new feature comedy, 27 Dresses (in theaters Jan. 18). Also on hand for the first look were Grey's Anatomy cast mates Ellen Pompeo and T.R. Knight, as well as 27 "bridesmaids" in white dresses bearing info for the film. Heigl said her own bridesmaids wore something with a bit more color. "They were Oscar de la Renta — little, short cocktail dresses, cranberry red, very Christmas-y," she said.Heigl told reporters she's wistful about her own De le Renta wedding dress, gushing, "I feel like I might just put it on to watch TV sometimes, because what else am I supposed to do with it?! It's so gorgeous. I never get to wear it again? That's sad." Of new husband Josh Kelley, she waxed poetic as well: "I look at him sometimes and think, 'Oh my god, you're mine.' Fox has bumped the opening of the Katherine Heigl/James Marsden rom-com 27 Dresses from Jan. 11 to Jan. 18 (the first day of the MLK Jr holiday weekend), not because there is any problem with it but rather because sneak-preview showings have been so encouraging, as the studio explains. In addition, the new date makes it the obvious choice for filmgoers disinterested in the sci-fi thriller Cloverfield, the only other pic opening that weekend. So if 27 Dresses is as big a hit as they are predicting, I suspect that'll be the end of Izzie, don't you think? While Nic Cage's National Treasure: Book of Secrets repeated as the weekend box-office champ (taking in another $35.6 million, for a gross of $124 mil to date), the big story belonged to three furry little fellas. In its third week of release, Alvin & the Chipmunks seized the No. 2 spot from Will Smith with a $30 mil haul, and is now on pace to be one of the year's top-10 grossing pics. (Its tally stands at $142.4 mil.)
