The first human expedition to Venus returns to Earth in a crash landing off the coast of Italy (in an ocean that is part of a set borrowed from MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY). The only survivor is Hopper and he's frightened that he may have lost a canister holding specimens of Venusian life. He has, all right, and the canister containing a gelatinous substance is found by a young boy. The gel hatches and zoologist Puglia puts the tiny creature in a cage. Imagine his surprise the next morning when the thing is now four feet long and hungry. It gets loose and begins attacking in the prescribed science-fiction manner, all the while increasing in size. Finally the army is called in with its bazookas and you know what happens next. The film is unusually dull and built almost entirely around the special effects of miniature model animator Harryhausen. In this early effort, Harryhausen's effects are only so-so. They look cheap, reflecting the film's budget, but carry a certain intrigue about them. A fight between the creature and a miniature elephant isn't too bad. Fans of the genre will definitely enjoy this more than anyone else. Watch for a cameo by the special effects man as he feeds elephants at the zoo. leave a comment
