A well-acted depiction of Germany's involvement in WW I, 1914: THE LAST DAYS BEFORE THE WAR benefits from some fine characterizations. However, the film is poorly photographed and the sound is awful, considering the technology that was available. The American release also suffers from an
unnecessary prolog and epilog in English with historian Fischer. Though it blames the war on Russia and Czar Nicholas II, the film, surprisingly, was banned for a time in Germany.
