Lesbianism, adultery, and murder are all mixed up in this basically failed attempt to combine the talents of director Dassin and New Wave novelist Duras. Dassin's real-life wife, Mercouri, is cast as the alcoholic wife of Finch. The couple are traveling through Spain with their daughter and Schneider, who presumably (it is never stated) is lover to both Mercouri and the adulterous Finch. Along the way, Mercouri and Schneider take a shower together. There are also some highly erotic lovemaking scenes between Finch and Schneider (imagined by Mercouri or real, the audience never knows). Finally, Mercouri befriends a simple Spaniard who has just murdered his wife and her lover. Hiding him, Mercouri promises to take him across the border to safety . The next day she finds him dead in his hiding place, and after a bitter argument with Schneider, she leaves her husband and child and sets out on her own. New Wave or Old Hat, this film is dull, boring and indifferently acted. leave a comment
