101 Dalmatians II: Patch'S London Adventure: Review

The animation is unremarkable, but this feature-length cartoon is a charming sequel that doesn't dishonor the source material. With Cruella Deville (voice of Susanne Blakeslee) banned from "fur-ther" mischief, the 101 Dalmatians are happily ensconced in an English suburb with their human pets. People patriarch Roger (Tim Bentinck) decides to move the pooches to a farm in Devon, a change of scenery that delights all but one of the dogs — forever feeling left out, Patch the Puppy (Bobby Lockwood) would rather stay behind and audition for his favorite television program, "The Thunderbolt Adventure Hour." And in true HOME ALONE style, Patch gets left behind. The lone pooch bravely ventures to London, where a TV producer (Michael Lerner) is holding try-outs for a co-starring spot with canine super-hero Thunderbolt (Barry Bostwick) and his sidekick, Lightning (Jason Alexander). Meanwhile, Cruella DeVil sublimates her Dalmatian-damaging urges by cultivating Lars (Martin Short), a modern artist who specializes in pictures of spots. While Cruella supports the arts, the devious Lightning, who's tired of playing second banana, tells Thunderbolt that the auditions are actually being held to find his replacement. Lightning suggests that Thunderbolt jump start his career by striking out and becoming a real-life hero. Thunderbolt hits the road and teams up with Patch, who failed at the audition, but gives the older dog some solid advice about altruistic behavior. Meanwhile, a newspaper reveals the location of Patch's siblings and Cruella reverts to her old ways, devising another dognapping scheme that will culminate in Lars's creation of a furry canvas! Patch and Thunderbolt must find the right stuff and become true-life rescuers — the safety depends of the 101 Dalmatians depends on their ability to translate TV stunts into practical solutions. Unlike many contemporary cartoons, this satirical direct-to-video entertainment doesn't over sell its homey message about fitting into a family, focussing instead laughs as Patch enters the dog-eat-dog world of show biz. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
