100 RIFLES

A violent western, much in the vein of THE WILD BUNCH (in fact, having several similarities that appear to be more than mere coincidence) and shot in Spain. Brown plays a sheriff on the trail of Reynolds, a Yaqui Indian who has robbed a bank in order to provide his people with rifles. Although he is committed to bringing his man back, once Brown sees the mistreatment the Indians have received at the hands of Lamas (a sadistic military leader whose methods include the hanging of corpses from telegraph poles), he also joins in the fight. Welch, whose father has recently been killed at the hands of Lamas, plays the leader of Indian rebels. Although spoken for by Reynolds, she and Brown have a go at it in a love scene more notable for its violence than for its tenderness. When Brown and Reynolds are captured by Lamas and all seems lost, the Yaquis stage an attack with their newly acquired rifles, freeing the sheriff and the fugitive. Brown returns to Arizona but without Reynolds, who has been left behind to bring order to the newly liberated Indians. Beneath all of the superficially fierce fighting sequences lies just another routine western plot. leave a comment
