A funny if somewhat retrograde film that sent Dudley Moore's career soaring briefly, while making some telling points about the problems of middle age. Moore is a successful songwriter with four Oscars to his name. Suffering from a combination of ennui and self-doubt, Moore sees a limousine go past in his ritzy neighborhood. In it is Derek, on her way to get married to Jones at a Beverly Hills church. This is the woman of Moore's dreams, whom he rates "11" on a scale of one ... read more leave a comment

  • HARVESTING CORNROWS | Today's News: Our Take | 3/29/2006
My Network (you know, the network made up of all the WB and UPN affiliates left out in the cold by those networks' merger) has found its "face"... you know, its Jennifer Love Hewitt, its Lauren Graham, its Teri Hatcher — and she's... Bo Derek. No kidding, the onetime 10 has been chosen to play the feisty fashionista at the center of its nightly telenovela, Secret Obsessions. Of course, if My Network were my network, the part would've gone to Apollonia. read more
  • The 78th Annual Academy Awards... | Today's News: Our Take | 3/5/2006
The 78th Annual Academy Awards 8:01: The opening scene just demonstrates why we love Jon Stewart: No one does self-deprecation so funny. Not even George Clooney. I think my dog would look great in a Steve Martin wig. 8:05: At first, the Hollywood royalty aren't laughing quite as hard as I am at Jon's jokes — especially not at the one about the suffering caused by movie piracy. But nothing brings people together like a Bjork joke. (She was trying on her gown and Cheney shot her!) And then the gay Western montage. Not even Stewart knows how to follow up that hilarity, so I'm not even gonna try. Brilliant. 8:16: Nicole Kidman's weird intro for the best-supporting-actor nominees has me thinking right away that Clooney will win. And then he does; self-deprecation keeps working wonders. "So I'm not winning director." The music starts after about 10 sec read more
  • 48th Annual Grammy Awards After... | Today's News: Our Take | 2/9/2006
48th Annual Grammy AwardsAfter proudly watching my pals Kimberly Caldwell and Rosanna Tavarez on TV Guide Channel's Countdown to the Grammys, followed, of course, by Joan and Melissa Rivers on our Grammy red-carpet show, I made sure my roommate's VCR was taping Idol and my own VCR was set for Lost. All systems go! Time for the Grammys.8:00 pm The animated group Gorillaz open with their hit "Feel Good Inc.," and since I love the song, guess what? It makes me feel good. But I totally picture my mother in Chicago being very confused.8:03 The goddess Madonna enters and I'm loving every minute of it. Can I please look that fabulous when I'm 47? After a brief lip-synched intro, she sings the rest of "Hung Up" live, and her hair looks like Lydia Cornell circa Too Close for Comfort.8:13 Kelly Clarkson s read more
